Romans 1

Introduction (1-7)

Romans 1:5 - “By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:”

Those who are called to the obedience of faith in the name of Christ Jesus have received:

… and are called to be saints (7).

“grace” - Strong’s Concordence [5485]

“saints” - Strong’s Concordence [40]

The Gentile’s Need of Righteousness (8-17)

Romans 1:12 - “That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.”

We can find comfort in the mutual faith of other believers in Christ.

Romans 1:16-17 - “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

We also should not be ashamed of the gospel of Christ.

“from faith to faith” = from faith alone

Habakkuk 2:4 - “Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.”

Sin Will Be Punished (18-32)

Romans 1:18 - “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who [ppt] hold the truth in unrighteousness;”

“wrath” - Strong’s Concordence [3709]

[ppt] = The present participle expresses continuous or repeated action

This verse is clearly referring to those who are non-believers, as evidenced in the following verses:

What is the judgement of God for them?

Romans 2-3 talks more about this, specifically how believers are no better than non-believers in that all people are deserving of death for their sin.
